Organizational Structure
Folkets Hus is Nørrebro’s own community center. Here you can get to know your neighbors, practice sports, drink coffee, watch movies, have community kitchen, do activism, hang out and much more!
Folkets Hus is run by volunteers. We have a high ceiling and lots of room for good ideas and local engagement. The house is user run, and we regularly hold house meetings where we make decisions about how the house should be run
Today, Folkets Café is on the ground floor, where you can drink delicious coffee, hang out with your neighbors and participate in interesting events. On the first floor is the community hall that’s being used for seminars, community kitchens, parties and many other things. On the second floor, you can find an activist workspace, where different grass root groups meet and plan their activism. The third floor of the house contains the sports room, that offers a host of sports activities for children and adults. Outside the house is the community bike workshop where you can fix your bike together with other nice people.
Decisions in the house are made by the house meeting that takes place every first Tuesday of the month. We use consensus based decision making which means that we try to meet each other in compromises when there are disagreements, and decisions should be accepted by all participants to pass. Apart from the house meeting, the café, the sports room and the 2nd floor have their own meetings for deciding on questions that only concern that part of the house.
The daily operation of the house is done by the operational groups. They take care of standing tasks and things that have to be dealt with between house meetings. All operational groups are open for people, and if you have an idea that is not covered by the current groups, a new can be set up! At the moment the active operational groups are:
Internal Communication Group
The internal communication group facilitates the communication that needs to take place within the house. This includes finding facilitation for the house meetings, sending out internal news letters, and other tasks to keep the house running smoothly. They also introduce new activists to the house.
External Communication Group
The external communication group takes care of the communication from the house to the outside world. For instance, they run the email, the social media and this website.
Shopping Group
The shopping group makes sure the house has all the supplies it needs for its day-to-day use.
Booking Group
The booking group is in contact with external groups and people who want to use the house’s facilities. They make sure that people who borrow the house know what’s expected of them and gives them access.
Economy Group
The economy group is responsible for the house’s economy. They prepare the budgets to be discussed at the house meetings and make payments on behalf of the house.
Key Group
The key group distributes keys to activists who need them and administer the digital system for giving access to different doors in the house.
Sport’s Room Group
The sport’s room group deals with everything related to the sport’s room, from upkeep of the third floor to putting the schedule together and being in contact with people who want to start new sport sessions.
Sound Group
The sound group takes care of the house’s sound equipment, which includes setting it up when it’s needed for events in the house.
Library Group
The library group is responsible for everything related to the library, such as buying new books and keeping the space in order.
Foundation Group
The foundation group is the contact point between the house and the foundation Fonden for De Åbne Rum, which in turn is the point of contact between the house and the municipality.
2nd Floor Group
The 2nd floor group is responsible for the 2nd floor, including upkeep of the space and being in touch with all the different groups who use the floor.
Cafe
The café isn’t a group in the same way as the others, but the café is still run quite autonomously from the rest of the house, and have their own meetings to make decisions that concern the café.
