Accessibility
Folkets Hus aims to be as accessible as possible, but the house is an old building and has been used in many different ways, and we know that this affects the accessibility of the house. The aim of this page is to provide as much information about the accessibility of the house as possible, so that people who come to the house can decide for themselves whether the house can cover their needs. If you have questions about the accessibility of the house that are not covered here, feel free to reach out to us on folketskommunikation@gmail.com, but the email is run by volunteers so getting an answer can sometimes take a few days.
Around the house is lots of cobblestone, but there are paths with a more even surface (gravel and asphalt) leading up to the house. There is a ramp to the café of width 145 cm and the width of the door is around 1 m. The ramp runs in parallel to the wall, so if you’re for instance coming in a wheelchair there needs to be space to turn to get in. The ramp through the door is removable so if it is not there, just ask the café activists and they will put it in place. The door to the library is around 90 cm wide and the door to the toilets is around 80 cm wide. There is a threshold for the door to the library with a height of a few centimeters, and none towards the doors to the toilets. The higher floors have stairs, and there are unfortunately no elevators.
For drop-offs it is possible to come with a car right in front of the house, but it is not allowed to park there. There are parking spots in the vicinity, but it can sometimes be hard to find a free spot. The closest parking slot is the intersection between Stengade and Baggesensgade around 50 m from the house. There is also a parking house at the intersection between Blågårdsgade and Smedegade.
The lighting setup in Folkets Hus is very DIY, which means that the brightness differs a bit between different parts of the house. There is lots of information about the house in the form of text on the walls. Some of the text is very small. Likewise, the noise level varies depending on which part of the house you are and what is going on there. In particular, the activities in the sports room can lead to noise also on the other floors. The library can often be used as a calmer space. Sometimes there are people having conversations in there but it is supposed to be a space where people can relax and read so noisier activities can and should typically be moved to the café.
The ground floor has three bathrooms, of which two are smaller and the third larger with more space on the floor. This toilet also has handlebars on both sides of the toilet seat and a simple changing table. The other floors also have smaller bathrooms.
